Horse slaughter for the purpose of human consuption is both wrong and a horrible practice. It will not solve the problem of too many horses and not enought owners. Only young healthy horses that can supply good meat will go to slaughter. Horses that would make good companions and great horses to own will be sent to be killed. Older, sicker horses will not be sought out. It will open the door to people adopting horses just to sell to a slaughter house ( a story I recently read about in Kentucky where a woman took horses claiming to adopt only to sell them to the slaughterhouse). Horses will be stolen, rounded up and adopted just to wind up dead. Horses are majestic and amazing creatures and don't deserve this fate. What does this say about us as human beings that we keep killing animals simple becasue it is convenient or we think it serves a purpose. People need to be educated about what will happen to horses if this door is opened - they may wind up on the endagered species list or bred just to become meat. Wrong Wrong Wrong and it is just that simple!

Very good points. Seems the pro slaugher folks like to bash horse rescues, Oh they are overwhelmed, oh there isn't enough of 'em. They need to get off their High horses and donate some bucks to them and be held accountible for their equine contributions to the slaughter pipeline! Good job!

Horse slaughter is wrong!! So many horse lovers around the world are devastated because of this slaughter issue!! I am one of those people! The only thing is, not many people wish to confront slaughter industries and think it is wrong to put people out of jobs. How can these people live with themselves for doing this sort of thing daily!? It makes me sick to think of these poor animals in the saleyards, or dogger pens just waiting around to be bought, and later on, slaughtered. It is not fair for them! I am a horse owner myself, and yet our family is knowleagable of ownership of horses, we get very upset when a horse dies or is injured. Sometimes they fight, and I must mention it is also extremely wrong to place horses in rings or yards and make them fight until they are badly hurt, or even until they are dead.

Sorry for any inconvenience,
Yours sincerely,

Horse prices have been steadily declining with the economy, since 9/11. Just as many horses are going to slaughter now as were before the ban. Killer buyers buy horses at the prices that the market sets, and the market is set by the ECONOMY in general. When people don't have jobs, take pay cuts, or have their business profit reduced, they can't afford to buy horses, buy more horses, feed the ones they have, or breed their horses. It's very simple economics 101. Luxury items, such as boats, RVs, and horses, are some of the first things to be taken out of the family budget. The auto market fell, the housing market is in the toilet, etc. Why would the horse market do any different? I don't understand why this concept is so difficult to understand.

I agree, backyard breeders are definitely part of the problem. I wish there was more we could do about it. However, bringing back slaughter will only encourage backyard breeders. They will now have an increased market for their poorly conformed grade mutts. How is that a good thing? Horse thieves will now have an easier way to get some quick cash for horses they steal. Why would we want to encourage that? Neglect will continue until people have jobs and money to feed their horses. Many of these people who neglect their horses don't want to sell. They would rather see their horses rot than let someone else have them or risk their horses going to slaughter.

Sherrie, this is an anti-slaughter web site. If you do not agree with it, I suggest you find somewhere else to discuss the issue. You will not change my mind nor the minds of the people who come here. I will leave your comments up, but any more will be deleted. There is no point in going back and forth on this issue. You either agree or you disagree.

I completely disagree with you. The slaughter market has everything to do with the drop in horse prices and the rise in neglect and abuse cases. I breed and raise performance horses and they are a business not pets. In some cultures human consumption of beef is wrong but that does not stop most of us from eating steak. I am also not sure where these slaughter houses you say have never quit operating are. If the horse prices are due to the economy then why do you think beef prices are at an all time high? If you want to do away with the slaughter houses all together then there has to be some responsibility on the part of alot of backyard breeders who cross a foxtrotter with a paint with no plans of use or means to feed or train the horse. This will never happen so the slaughter houses are a necessary evil. I do not like to see horses die but if that will bring the market back and allow horses again to be a profitable industry then I am for it. I have been to a local horse sale and a man bought a grade stallion jfor $50.00. He said to the people around him that he had several mares at home and would pasture breed them. I am not sure what he was thinking but if the sire is only worth $50 that the foals will be worth even less.

I have 4 horses and board 3 more. You're correct, the horse market fell out because of the economy. Bringing back slaughter won't help. We would have to slaughter 1 million horses or more a year to have any effect, and there is not enough demand for their meat to support those numbers. Slaughter plants cost too much to run to let less than 80% of the meat sell for human consumption.

Do you even have a horse? The reason they are starving is because without the slaughter market the bottom fell out of the horse market and a grade horse that use to be worth $500-$600 is now worthless. Horses are livestock.

There are just as many horses being slaughtered now as there were before the ban took effect. Horses would be starving with or without horse slaughter. Killer buyers do NOT buy skinny horses. They want young horses in good flesh. People who are willing to neglect their horses are not the ones that will be taking them to an auction with killer buyers. They will let their horses rot in their fields regardless. If you want to see fewer horses starving, start working to support your local horse rescues and enact tougher humane laws. Most of us involved in the anit-horseslaughter movement are working there too. Slaughter does NOT effect the neglect of horses.
